Mindfulness for exceptional Times: Showing up for Ourselves and Our WorlD

5-week class series
Mondays, 8/3 - 8/31, 7:30-8:45pm
offered in partnership with recess collective*, via zoom

Description:

In this five-week online course, through guided practice, teachings offered, journaling, break-out groups, and sharing/discussion/Q&A, we’ll study several aspects of mindfulness, including:

  • Review of the Basics + Daily Practice Support

  • Mindfulness-Based Self-Care Practices

  • Lovingkindness and Compassion Practice for Self and All

  • Gratitude and Joy as Antidotes to Despair/Overwhelm

  • Showing up Mindfully for Our World

From the insecurity of a global pandemic to the incredible uprisings against injustice to the ever-present dangers of climate change and broken leadership, this is undeniably a huge and unwieldy time to be alive.

Will we disappear underneath our overwhelm or show up for ourselves and each other with love, clarity and purpose?

Mindfulness practice provides us with the tools necessary to stay present for all that is arising in both our external and internal realities, and to do the work to create discernment, spaciousness, kindness and understanding in a world that desperately needs us to wake up.

Participants will be supported in their practice with mid-week emails from Charity containing tips and inspiration, a meditation-buddy support system, and one 40-minute one-on-one session with Charity to be scheduled at your convenience.

It is wonderful, and necessary, to be in community for these practices and teachings.

Audience: Adults + Teens

Payment:

$125 (per household)
NOTE: This class is free for BIPOC and frontline healthcare workers. Use the code NOFEE. If your family is experiencing economic hardship during the pandemic, and the cost is prohibitive, please use code COMMUNITYCARES for 30% off the cost of class. 15-Day vegan support journey!
for health, for earth, for the animals
Mon oct 5 - mon oct 19
via zoom/Email/YOUTUBE
offered in partnership with recess collective*

Have you considered transitioning to a plant-based diet for health, environmental, or ethical reasons? Are you curious about what eating more plants and less meat/dairy would look like for you and your family? Do you have questions about how and why you might make these changes? Are you inspired, or resistant, or somewhere in the middle?

Then this loving, fun and yummy no-judgement 15-day exploration in community is for you!

This experience is meant to be an inspiration to incorporate MORE plants and LESS meat/dairy for 15-days (rather than an all or nothing thing, although you could treat it that way if that’s what’s calling you), and an opportunity to LOOK DEEPLY and BEAR WITNESS in a loving container.

This will be a SAFE and NO-JUDGEMENT space, and there will be opportunities to explore, using various mindfulness-based practices, our internal and societal beliefs/biases/habits/conditioning at the root of our food choices, and what it might look like to shift them.

During our three classes, I’ll weave in ethical teachings on interbeing and non-harming, plus various relevant mindfulness, compassion and inquiry practices to hold us as we explore. And I'll provide practical knowledge like nutrition facts and my favorite recipes and techniques to strengthen your foundation for the journey.

This is also meant to be a celebration of every additional act of kindness we together as a group put into the world through our food choices over these 15 days. We live in a world where it's not always clear how to reduce the immense suffering that exists, yet our food choices have the potential to play a concrete and immediate role in alleviating some of that suffering. Now that’s good news!

To further support you on your journey, I’ll send out daily emails and journal prompts, and share my favorite (easy and cheap!) recipes, tips and tricks, and hopefully even some cooking videos (this will be hilarious, I’m sure, as I’m a bit of a messy and wild cook!) I’m also hoping to incorporate a live co-cooking session on Zoom, too, where we all cook a meal together!

Our Vegan Journey will consist of:

1. THREE ZOOM CLASSES led by Charity Kahn:
Monday, Oct 5, 7:30-8:45PM (Kick-off)
Monday, Oct 12, 7:30-8:45PM (Mid-journey check-in)
Monday, Oct 19, 7:30-8:45PM (Celebration!)
(I'll will remain on Zoom for 15 minutes after each class for additional Q&A)
(These classes WILL be recorded and made available in case you miss one, but we encourage participation so we can all support each other, all the time!)

2. DAILY SUPPORT:
I will send out daily support emails, including tips, suggested journal prompts, inspirations, and RECIPES, and be available to respond to your questions.

3. MID-JOURNEY SUPPORT:

I'll share a few cooking videos, and (fingers crossed) we'll figure out how to co-cook something on Zoom! We'll also have a buddy system so you have someone to check in and share with between our gatherings. Additionally, I'll suggest documentaries and articles for you to engage with if you want to go deeper.

4. ONE-ON-ONE SUPPORT SESSION:
Participation in the course includes one 40-minute private session with me where you can ask all your questions, and/or get mindfulness-based support for your journey. After registering, you’ll receive the link to schedule your one-on-one.

Payment:

The awesome organizers will have clear markings on the ground so kids/families are supported in remaining distanced. Wear your masks and get ready to rock out to your favorite JAM songs! Requests encouraged, of course!

Here's more about the event, from amazing visionary and organizer Angie Pettit-Taylor and her team:

"In collaboration with Supervisor Gordon Mar, The Office of Economic and Workforce Development and People of Parkside Sunset, we are launching The Outer Sunset Farmers Market & Mercantile on 37th Ave between Ortega and Pacheco. This will be a weekly year round open air market with a blend of farmers, producers, food artisans, food vendors, makers, merchants, artists, organizations, performing artists and engaging activities... all within strict compliance of City health orders and directives. It is a large street so everyone will have plenty of space, face coverings are required, several handwashing stations on hand, clearly marked distancing cues on the ground, frequent cleaning of surfaces and plenty of signage as well as market ambassadors to help keep folks on track. Our highest priority is that of safety for all while hopefully contributing to our community’s well-being."
